I must admit that I am a big Kim John Payne fan! A couple of years ago, Rob and I read Simplicity Parentingand we then took the parenting class (by the same name). Last year, I even got to meet Kim John Payne at a Simplicity Parenting workshop and lecture. And this year, he returns to the Lexington Waldorf School to lead another workshop called the Soul of Discipline. If you’re not familiar with his work, it’s very readable. Simplicity Parenting has a very digestible message about slowing down our own lives and our children’s lives to create happier, healthier families. Kim John Payne is an excellent speaker: very down to earth, charismatic, and just plain likable. The workshop is open to the public, so if you would like to go, tickets are still available!! I’ll be there for sure! All I had to read was the bullet in the flyer – “What to do with the “NO!” response” – and I bought my ticket!!
Here is the blurb from the Lexington Waldorf School Website.
A parent’s journey is filled with both precious moments and difficult situations. Our sense of how we are doing is often determined by the way in which we respond to the flashpoints of parenting. These moments will either refine or consume us.
Many parenting challenges occur naturally as part of child development; thus, it is possible to anticipate them and prepare. Kim John Payne, author of the bestseller, Simplicity Parenting, provides a fresh perspective and a developmental roadmap to help parents and educators establish both nurturing and effective discipline following three cumulative phases:
- training creative compliance for the young child
- building emotional skills for the elementary age,
- and, for the teenager, managing critical choices.
- What to do with the “NO!” response.
- How to break the habit of children interrupting adult conversation.
- If we “Manage” our children, they will “Unionize”. What are the alternatives?
- Alternatives to the over use of time out.
- Choices- How many how soon?
You must think I sit at my computer waiting for your posts. I just happen to always be on when they come in! I love him too. He’s phenomenal and well worth the time and money. Not to mention affordable. I’ll be there too, with Jason. We need all the help we can get. Looking forward to it!

That’s so awesome that you and Jason are both going. It made a huge difference in our lives when Rob and I both went to the Simplicity Parenting class together. I guess those 8 or so weeks are enough Kim John Payne for Rob. He was quite happy to volunteer to stay home and watch the girls!! But at least one of us will be there!!
