It’s All About the Fit!

We parted ways with our new acupuncturist.  We were seeing her as our latest stepping stone in our long, long, long journey to getting Keira to go to sleep!  This woman may very well be talented, but she was just NOT a good fit for our family.  Our goal – our dream really – is to enable Keira to fall asleep early enough so that she can be well-rested by her 7AM wake-up call.  She currently wakes up swinging!  And screaming!  Because she is being woken out of a dead sleep by her unlucky parents!!  This acupuncturist told me that Keira’s sleep problem wasn’t that bad (I should see some of her other little insomniac patients?! – those were not her words, but her sentiment) and she gave me lavender oil to help Keira sleep.  Lavender oil?!  Let’s recount our journey to sleep thus far:  reflexology.  homeopathy.  chiropractic.  brain gym.  energy kinesiology.  Her sleep has not been improved by one of these powerful healing modalities.  Now don’t get me wrong, Keira has received wonderful gifts from each of these healings.  But sleep has NOT been among those gifts!  And she gave the kid lavender oil?!  What, I never read a sleep book before?!

Now that I have settled down (somewhat, anyway), I think that she must be more of a complementary healer, as opposed to an alternative/more hardcore healer.  I know that she does work in hospitals (perhaps using acupuncture as a way to help kids to better/more quickly recover in the hospital?).  So perhaps she is a really good fit for parents just getting their feet wet with alternative healing therapies?  But not us.  We want Rambo healers.  Healers who come out with their (gentle, non-invasive) guns blazing – able to solve any problem with their (gentle, non-invasive) weapon of choice!  We have actually found these!!  When I first met one chiropractor, I told her that I wasn’t sure that she could fix my headaches.  I don’t remember what she said, but what I took away was,  “Is that a challenge, lady?  Because I am that good.  I will fix your headaches.”  Or the eye doctor who sent us to Children’s Hospital to get a second opinion and told us come back (with the chief of the department’s recommendation) and she’d let us know if his diagnosis/recommendation was right or not.  ‘Cause she’s that good!  Now this is the level of competence that I am looking for!!  This is why we spend outrageous amounts of money on alternative health care!!  If we want lavender oil, we’ll go to Bath and Body Works.

But, I still think that acupuncture may be able to help my dear, sweet girl to sleep.  She cannot fall asleep before 9.  No matter how exhausted she may be, she hangs on ’til between 8:45 and 9:15.  This no-sleep time (7 to 9) is associated with the pericardium meridian.  And it seems to me that no one can move chi like a good acupuncturist.  I have calls into a couple of acupuncturists who come highly recommended by two wicked good (I’m talkin’ Rambo!) healers.  And so…our journey to sleep continues!

  1. Omg, you have me laughing my ass off. You’re too freakin’ funny, Lady. Lavender oil. That’s just beautiful.

    • Oh Heather! You are too kind! I have to say that I was cracking myself up, sitting on the couch last week, writing my Rambo healer jokes. I was imagining Dr. Grace wearing all the Rambo gear to hold up two activators and a set of blocks. I’m still cracking myself up!! Hope you guys had a great weekend. See you tomorrow!!

  2. Please share what you find out. We are working on sleep issues with a cranio sacral therapist…

    • Hi Franziska! How do you like the cranio-sacral therapy? Any luck with sleep? I know a little about it as my reflexologist used to sort of dabble in it! So…I found an acupuncturist who specializes in kids that comes highly recommended. Now I just have to find a time when I can take just my big girl for the first long appt. I’ll keep you updated! Thanks so much for following my blog! Best, Tracy
