F-You Thinner Peace!

So yesterday, I posted about EFT.  I learned about EFT in this sh*tty workshop called Thinner Peace .  The title of the workshop should have been a dead give-away that it wasn’t going to be the holistic path to  finding inner peace and thereby ending one’s unhealthy relationship with food.  That seminar would have been called something more like:  “You are perfect just the way you are.  Inner Peace is Within.  Accept this and heal your relationship with food.”  The title would not have contained the word “thinner”.  Anyway…I have decided to vent about this crappy class, in hopes that others will not waste their time or money on similar seminars.

I had two HUGE problems with the class:

(1)  The instructor used this loser weight loss book called Six Weeks to OMG:  Get Skinnier than all your friends.  Yup!  This was the book that she was using to help a room full of women come to peace with their over-use of food.  And the class was at the Center at Westwoods – which, if you’ve never been, is an absolutely beautiful healing center.  A more appropriate venue for this class would have been a Holiday Inn, not sacred healing grounds!  This OMG book is ridiculous.  The facilitator was actually using this worthless book’s weight loss advice.  She actually suggested that people not eat when they are hungry.  She was NOT saying, something like – stop and think before you eat and ask yourself, “are you really hungry?”.  Nope!  She was passing on this book’s stupid message that it is when your body is hungry – and you do not eat – that you will actually use your body’s (fat) reserves and thereby lose weight.  The theory is not false.  NOR is it a viable long-term way to live!!  The key to successful weight loss – and maintaining it! – is learning to listen to you body and only eating when you are hungry.  And chosing foods that are healthy.  She was actually suggesting to this room full of women that they should ignore their bodies’ messages, so as to lose weight?  She’s off track.  The key is tuning into our bodies NOT ignoring them.  Overeating is ignoring your body when it’s full…  Read Geneen Roth’s Women, Food, and God.  She is awesome!  On her Web site, the author explains,

“The way you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive. No matter how sophisticated or wise or enlightened you believe you are, how you eat tells all. The world is on your plate.  When you begin to understand what prompts you to use food as a way to numb or distract yourself, the process takes you deeper into realms of spirit and to the bright center of your own life. Rather than getting rid of or instantly changing your conflicted relationship with food, Women Food and God is about welcoming what is already here, and contacting the part of yourself that is already whole—divinity itself.”

She’s got it!  Now it’s just the pesky implementation!!  But, I do think that EFT can be helpful to the process.

(2)  Now back to crappy Thinner Peace, it is my very strong opinion that this woman never struggled with weight a day in her life!  She told us all about her healthy eating.  No breakfast ’til mid morning when she’s hungry (again the OMG! book’s recommendation for burning all the calories you ate for dinner the night before) and then a salad with no dressing and some protein for lunch, etc…  But the real clue that she has never struggled with her weight were all her stories about her *fat friend*!  About how she was always up her fat friend’s *ss to eat better!  How annoying is this?!  She actually told the story of her shaming her fat friend into not eating s’mores at a family reunion.  What?!  Lady, read Women, Food, and God and do NOT teach this class!!  End rant.

I will end on a positive note that I enjoyed the EFT portion of the class.  But I will never, not ever, see that woman as an EFT coach.  Promise ‘ya that!!

  1. Oh my, Lady. A: I can’t believe you took a seminar called Thinner Peace. B: What’s worse is the woman who actually ran it. I do hope you send out a serious complaint or something. Sounds like she could have caused A LOT of damage to anyone less intelligent and with it than you. What a crock! Let’s do another, real workshop about our relationship to food together!

    • I know, I know, I know! I knew that I shouldn’t have gone. But I really wanted to learn EFT and this class landed in my in-box AND it was at the Center at Westwoods. Your soul is fed by just walking around their grounds! But you know, you got me thinking…I am going to write a little note to the Center at give them my feedback on the class… At Kripalu, actually (as a complete aside) no classes can contain the word weight, thin, beauty, etc. But then the instructors just rename the same exact class something that fits the Kripalu rules!! So anyway…YES! let’s build a really good class together. Can we use your beautiful classroom?!

  2. Love this post and Women, Food and God. Maybe I should read it again.

    • I decided to read it again, too!! I just ordered a used copy for 1 cent on amazon. Too bad it costs 3.99 to ship it!! I must have lent my original copy out…
