Emotional Freedom Techinique (EFT)

I’ve discovered a new little trick…Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).  A more descriptive name for it is tapping.  When you are feeling upset/anxious/uneasy, you do this tapping sequence.  It seems to me that you are addressing your negative self-talk primarily.  Say you are anxious about going to a family function where you know a difficult relative will be in attendance.  If you feel yourself getting worked up (and you want to change an existing pattern, say just perhaps, a pattern of eating a carton of ice cream?!).  Instead of going to the freezer, you stop and do this EFT thing.

The official EFT discovery statement is:

Our negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system.

The Energy Therapy Center explains,

“EFT works to clear such disruptions and eliminate the resulting emotional response or intensity to restore emotional harmony and offer relief from physical discomfort.

This is done by focusing on the specific problem whilst tapping with fingers on the end points of energy meridians. The combination of sending kinetic energy to our energy system, whilst uncovering and focusing on root causes, facilitates a “straightening out” of the energy system thereby eliminating the “short circuit” to the body’s learnt response or negative emotion.”

Here is a video of a practitioner doing EFT.  It’s pretty simple.  The only thing (and this a big thing!) is that you have to actually make the decision to do the tapping when you are upset (as opposed to relying on your usual coping stategies!!).  I’ll keep you updated as I experiment with this more…
